A major breakthrough has been achieved in the field of welding technology for cemented carbide woodworking tools, and the resulting findings demonstrate tremendous application potential and economic benefits.
Cemented carbide woodworking tools offer advantages such as high hardness, excellent wear resistance, long service life, and sharp cutting edges that remain unchanged and undeformed. During use, these tools do not require frequent sharpening or regrinding, while ensuring high precision and quality of the machined products. They represent an inevitable trend toward replacing high-speed steel tools. As an example, consider the welding of ultra-long, thin strip-shaped cemented carbide blades: This technology enables precise welding of cemented carbide strips—measuring up to 1000 mm in length, 1 mm in thickness, and 10 mm in width—to one side of a strip-shaped steel blade measuring 1000 mm in length, 4 mm in thickness, and 30 mm in width, thereby creating a woodworking planer blade with a single-sided cemented carbide cutting edge.
This technology employs a high-frequency, fully automated brazing process that encompasses the rational selection of raw materials—including blade bodies, blade strips, and brazing alloys—as well as the meticulous design of the structural shapes of blade bodies and brazed joints. It also involves precise control of welding deformation and stress relief, the fabrication of specialized welding equipment and tooling fixtures, and advanced cold-working techniques for tool shaping. Compared with similar foreign technologies, this technology uses relatively simple production equipment, boasts a high degree of automation, requires fewer welding steps, doubles production efficiency, and reduces production costs by more than half. Moreover, in certain aspects, its product quality surpasses that of comparable foreign products. Some of its processes are uniquely innovative, and the welding speed can reach up to 1200 mm/min. This technology is not only suitable for welding woodworking planer blades but can also be widely applied to the welding and product development of cemented carbide tools used for cutting paper, fabric, and leather, as well as cemented carbide tools for mechanical machining and cemented carbide molds.
With the growing trend toward mechanization in the woodworking industry, the outlook for the woodworking tool market is extremely promising. The demand for various types of woodworking tools continues to rise, particularly in the international market, where there is a huge appetite for high-quality tools. This technological breakthrough from Harbin Institute of Technology holds great potential to bring new development opportunities to woodworking tool manufacturers and drive technological upgrades across the industry.
